Schiuma di mondi
Foam Of Worlds
Anna Marziano’s observant first feature SCHIUMA DI MONDI asks how much room remains for transformative action when our quotidian normalcy is entirely inseparable from a state of permanent political and ecological emergency. The film’s subdued narrative drops in at regular intervals on Antonia, a struggling lawyer on the island of Sant’Erasmo near Venice. Between quiet dinners, ferry rides and the household chores she shares with her daughter Lena, Antonia is carrying out research to put together a legal case against climate injustice, which threatens the lives of the region’s inhabitants. Crafted with a palette of earthy browns and misty greys, Marziano’s low-contrast images convey a sense of immediacy and intimacy that borders on the documentary. The porous sound design—at times ominous, tearing the fabric of daily harmony with news of tyrannical leaders; at others comforting, bringing in the gentle words of a distant friend—dovetails with the aquatic imagery woven throughout the film. Together, they coalesce into a fragile yet unwavering microcosm of our contemporary world, distilled through Marziano’s lens with earnest solidarity, lucid caution and without any hint of hopeless cynicism.
