Rose Of Nevada
In his follow-up to ENYS MEN (2022), Mark Jenkin returns to the Cornish coast to probe the mysteries held by its rugged landscapes. When a strange boat—which gives the film its name—reappears after being lost at sea for three decades, Nick (George MacKay) enlists himself as a crew member on the fishing vessel to support his struggling family alongside another villager, Liam (Callum Turner). Their days are long and repetitive, hours spent trapping, preserving and gutting the catch, a laborious scenario that soon turns into a nightmare when they inexplicably return to shore in 1993. Trapped in a slippage of time, Nick becomes increasingly paranoid and frustrated when they are mistaken for the fishermen who originally vanished, whereas the easy, outgoing Liam is happy to play the role and lean into his new life. Crafted with Jenkin’s signature filmmaking technique—shooting on 16mm with a wind-up Bolex, then constructing the soundscape entirely in post-production—the sense of asynchronicity is felt in every scene with the temporally dislocated young men. An enigmatic ghost story, ROSE OF NEVADA lures as it haunts, offering a meditation on the secrets and horrors of the natural world. (Winnie Wang)
