¡Qué hacer!

This collective US production, which was produced in parallel to the Allende election campaign and at the same time thematizes it, is not recognized by Ruiz himself as an integral part of his work. Yet his signature is clear in the mise en scène. The semi-documentary parable of a Peace Corps volunteer who deserts to the Chilean left after a few flashes of insight is largely improvised. Alienating elements such as diegetic breaks and performances by the singer Country Joe McDonald make for good viewing. Dramatic, however, were the consequences for many members of the team, who became victims of torture, murder or imprisonment immediately after the coup. (Silvia Hallensleben)
