Crossroad
Phil Solomon found new cinematic wings in the Grand Theft Auto universe, which he creatively explored one final night spent with his best friend Mark LaPore. Gaming uncanny scenes and actions far off the beaten path, they made a get well soon card for their mutual friend entitled FOR DAVID GATTEN, “a landscape of eternal returns, a well of anomalous poetry” (Mark McElhatten). In the wake of LaPore’s sudden death, it was retitled CROSSROAD and serves as a prelude to Solomon’s GTA generated IN MEMORIAM (MARK LAPORE 1952–2005). REHEARSALS FOR RETIREMENT is a rehearsal “for eternity. Life a sum of stolen moments stolen away by the Grand Theft. Next stop, the twilight plane, as an essence scattered, haunting all we ever knew” (MM). LAST DAYS IN A LONELY PLACE is an apocalyptic noir rumination, tapping resonant aspects of Gus Van Sant’s LAST DAYS (2005) and Nicholas Ray’s IN A LONELY PLACE (1950), works crucial to LaPore in his own end times.
