Barking in the Dark

Over more than 20 years, Marie Losier has compiled a joyful and eclectic catalogue of films about contemporary artists, including the Kuchar Brothers, Genesis P-Orridge and Peaches. More than mere portraits, they are collaborations in which different ways of seeing, moving and living in the world become cinema, with Losier’s high- energy Bolex, in-camera editing and love for everything beautiful and peculiar adapting to each new subject. BARKING IN THE DARK is her most mysterious work to date, a study of a band/group /contemporary artist troupe whose identities have remained unknown for over 50 years: The Residents. Yet their look is very recognisable, with each member decked out in an elegant tuxedo, cane, top hat and a gigantic eyeball instead of a head. There is a man behind all this: the president of The Cryptic Corporation, Homer Flynn, who manages the group, attends to their style and maintains their archive. The film delves into this garage-cum-treasure trove, full of objects and records from all the phases of their career. As The Residents walk around their neighbourhood, Flynn and Losier reflect on music, personality, fandom, history and a life dedicated to work as imagination, their only distinguishing feature.
