LE CORSET is the solo directorial debut by Louis Clichy who, after working as a character animator at Pixar, co-directed two successful 3D features in France together with Alexandre Astier. The film tells the story of Christophe, an eleven-year-old boy struggling to connect with his rigid father while working on the family farm. When Christophe begins leaning over and collapsing, a doctor prescribes a heavy, restrictive, orthopaedic corset made of iron to keep him upright. Forced to give up farm work, Christophe discovers a transformative passion for organ music and forms a bond with a young girl named Clara. LE CORSET’s 2D animation combines ink brushstrokes with watercolours—embracing comic-strip conventions and devices of perspective to convey Christophe’s subjective experience. The soundtrack is heavily anchored in realism and sublime organ music—making fascinating use of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. Inspired by the filmmaker’s own childhood experiences, LE CORSET is a compelling tale about the clumsy trials of adolescence, the difficulties of expressing and communicating our true selves and the strange paths of healing we take in a world that has become out of balance.
