Open-Air Cinema in the Augarten from June 26 to August 24, 2025
From the end of June, the natural garden of the Filmarchiv Austria will once again become a stage for Kino wie noch nie. On 60 summer evenings, you can look forward to film classics, new discoveries and discussions in the open air. The Wanderkino Bioskop brings back early cinema magic with hand-operated projections. Culinary delights are provided by the Grünstern garden kitchen with burgers, grilled fish and vegetarian specialties.

Viennale Favorites
We are especially looking forward to a reunion with five Viennale favorites from last year's festival program at this year's Kino wie nie. In cooperation with the Filmarchiv Austria, the following film highlights are on the program:

ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT

Before the main character becomes recognizable, the prologue in nocturnal Mumbai makes the fear of never quite arriving as a newcomer palpable. The film follows two unequal nurses who share an apartment - a tender, bittersweet study of female solidarity. It subtly deals with central themes of India: religion, housing shortages and gender roles.

At the age of 74, Almodóvar shoots in English for the first time - without losing his stylistic elegance or his fascination for complex female characters. With the great actresses Moore and Swinton, he tells of deep friendship, life and self-determined death. He poses existential questions in a quiet, subdued dramatic style. For this, the Spanish master was awarded the Golden Lion in Venice.

Rasoulof deconstructs the patriarchal theocracy that he condemned using the example of a family: a father becomes a judge at the Revolutionary Court, the daughters sympathize with the protests that have shaken Iran since 2022. The family drama develops into a paranoia thriller, interspersed with social media clips of the bloody reality - an uprising against a theocracy that threatens to suffocate its population.

Sean Baker's multi-award-winning masterpiece tells the story of Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn who sees a chance for a better life in an oligarch's son - he is hoping for a green card. After a flash wedding in Las Vegas, his parents turn up with their henchmen. What could seem clichéd becomes a clever, funny and touching portrait - carried by a terrific Mikey Madison.
