Le Temps retrouvé

Anhand von Fotos erinnert sich der Autor im Krankenbett an das Leben und die Liebschaften der gehobenen Pariser Gesellschaft zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ruiz hält sich weitgehend an die lange als unverfilmbar geltende Buchvorlage, vertraut aber auch auf seine Experimentierfreude. Wie Proust seine Sinnsuche durch die Fiktionalisierung der Wirklichkeit betrieb, verhilft Ruiz wiederum mit surrealen, traumhaften Sequenzen Prousts Roman zur Realität. Im Assoziieren unwillkürlicher Erinnerungsfetzen verschränken sich die Zeitebenen, oszillieren Vergangenheit und Gegenwart und gleiten in rauschhaftem, schwindelerregendem Kopfkino ineinander. Wir bedauern, mitteilen zu müssen, dass Catherine Deneuve ihren geplanten Besuch bei der Viennale wegen einer Erkrankung kurzfristig absagen muss. Die Vorführung des Films LE TEMPS RETROUVE im Rahmen der Retrospektive Raúl Ruiz, in dem Catherine Deneuve eine Hauptrolle spielt und den sie persönlich präsentieren wollte, findet wie geplant am 26. Oktober um 20.30 Uhr im Gartenbaukino statt.

“A friend reminded me of an article by Jacques Bourgeois published in 1946 in the Revue du Cinéma entitled ‘Proust and the Cinema’. The author claimed that Proust is easier to film than to read because so many of his narrative procedures, which are so difficult to elaborate in literary terms, are much easier to deal with cinematographically. In a film, the framing aspect is made up of the period, by certain sets and actors, while the narrative is, of course, what happens. I have the impression that these parameters are inverted in Proust: the narrative has become the framing and the framing the narrative, and, except for the First World War, which creates a framing effect in the novel, nothing very important happens, given that everything always returns to the point of origin. We are constantly returning to childhood, to a detail or an experience, with signs of repetition, cyclical elements that are, in the end, the object of the framing. My position was: I filmed the Proustian narrative as a frame. One situation leads to another, time passes; then, after a certain moment, emotion takes over and one ends up loving these absurd characters… I felt at home filming Proust’s universe, because it reminded me of my own films.” (Raúl Ruiz)
