Marine Target

Aus großer Höhe nimmt eine Kamera ein Objekt ins Visier, das einsam aus der Meeresoberfläche ragt; dann nähert sie sich diesem sukzessive an, bis eine Art Plattform erkennbar wird, ein Ort, halb Relikt, halb noch in Betrieb. Dieses „Marine Target“ nimmt Marxt zur Hälfte seines Films näher in Augenschein, und zwar bis in kleinste Details, bevor die Kamera wieder auf Distanz geht. Während des Aufstiegs wird der unheimliche Kontext der zweifachen Bewegung im Off-Kommentar entschlüsselt: Das Marine Target diente als Probeziel für die amerikanischen Atombomben 1945. Lukas Marxt, Viennale regular who created RALF’S COLOURS, continues the disquieting exploration of the Salton Sea begun in IMPERIAL IRRIGATION: a site haunted by traces of catastrophic US nuclear testing. The images and sounds, at first, feign impersonality: as a drone camera slowly descends to a small, long abandoned “marine target” in the water, a mechanically produced voice rattles off the dry, “official”, military facts and figures. The sights of dead birds, wire fences that point to a void, and ominously broken pipelines narrate the hints of a darker backstory. (Adrian Martin)
