Dorogie tovarishchi!

1962 regt sich in der südrussischen Industriestadt Nowotscherkassk Protest gegen Normerhöhungen und steigende Lebensmittelpreise. Unter Stalin, so klagt Lyuda vor allen, die es hören wollen, wäre es nie soweit gekommen. Immer mehr Menschen sammeln sich auf der Straße, der Stadtsowjet, zu dem auch Lyuda gehört, gerät unter Druck; die Armee wird herbeigerufen. Im nachfolgenden Chaos verschwindet Lyudas Tochter, die unter den Protestierenden war. Auf der Suche nach ihr kann die verzweifelte Mutter ihren inneren Widersprüchen nicht mehr ausweichen. Am Beispiel Lyudas rekonstruiert Andrei Konchalovsky ein lang verschwiegenes historisches Ereignis, in bestechend klarem Schwarzweiß. (Barbara Schweizerhof)

A workers’ strike is to be violently put down by the Soviet army and the KGB. Who is to blame for the bloody escalation? Andrei Konchalovsky, co-writer of Andrei Tarkovsky’s ANDREY RUBLEV (1966) and now 83 years old, retells the true story of the Novocherkassk massacre that happened in June 1962 in ethereal black-and-white images. DOROGIE TOVARISHCHI! – lauded at Venice this year with the Special Jury Prize – is a tonally eccentric work that mixes raunchy comedy and melodramatic scenes with a deliberate sense of unease. It focuses on the story of a woman called Lyudmila, a devotedly nostalgic Stalinist and bad-tempered mother, who is working in the city committee when the labor strike gets out of hand upon the arrival of prominent party members. Lyudmila’s daughter gets mixed up in the protests and vanishes without a trace after snipers shoot into the demonstrating masses, thereby killing dozens of people – and quickly making the bodies disappear in order to cover up all traces of the murderous dictatorship.
Ideologically speaking, DOROGIE TOVARISHCHI! is not so easy to grasp in its weird mixture of Soviet satire, political criticism, and potential revisionism. All the more reason to go see this lively, rousing film – to make up one’s own mind. (Stefan Grissemann)
