AUGURIES: Stubbornly looking at the ruins of a commune we search for auguries. For instance: “Fair weather for drifters.” We wander by foot across times, erratically shooting images and recording sounds through the kaleidoscopic spatiality of Alentejo, a Portuguese region named after a river, beyond a river...
LIGHT, BLAZE, FULGOR: We once encountered a black-and-white photograph printed in a newspaper: the remnants of a commune. It shows a tree, a standing ruin, a shadow projected from its wall to the ground, a well, and an open field with stones and flowers...

The air is just as damp outside, mist hangs over the Slovenian landscape as the containers are dropped off at each village home. Most will be collected, but one will remain unclaimed, the one left hanging outside the house of Oroslan, that’s how they’ll know something is wrong. OROSLAN may carry the elderly man’s name, but it’s hard to gauge what role his story plays when so much keeps unfolding around it..

RO/F/D 2019, 98 min, OV with German subtitles, D: Corneliu Porumboiu,
Cast: Vlad Ivanov, Catrinel Marlon, Rodica Lazar
On La Gomera in the Canaries, there exists a language that is whistled, not spoken. The high-pitched tones carry perfectly from mountain peak to mountain peak, just as they do between the tall buildings of a city like Bucharest, where secret codes are desperately needed, as everybody there seems to be watching everybody else. A middle-aged policeman named Cristi thus arrives on the island to learn how to whistle, lured there by a mysterious woman called Gilda, the perfect name for a femme fatale, as film history suggests...

Li sleeps by day and works by night, when he moves through Beijing at dawn and dusk, it’s almost as quiet as the rooms he’s paid to watch over, the office building with the glass corridors and fluorescent lighting. Its immaculate surfaces match those of the cityscape outside, although gaps remain, the saplings among green netting and trash, the playground walled in by panels of graffiti-covered plastic, the old building marked for demolition whose damp basement is Li’s abode...
