Tres tristes tigres

Mit seinem ersten Langfilm positionierte sich Ruiz beim zweiten stark politisierten Festival des “Nuevo Cine Chileno” in Viña del Mar deutlich gegen das Agitkino und für artistische Autonomie. Aus dem 1967 erschienenen Debütroman des kubanischen Autors Guillermo Cabrera Infante entwickelte er seine Hommage auf ein trink- und gewaltseliges nächtliches Santiago. Den poetischen Überschwang der Vorlage greift er im Chiaroscuro von Diego Bonacinas tänzelnder Weitwinkel-Kamera auf. Heute beeindruckt der mit minimalen Mitteln realisierte und in Locarno mit dem Goldenen Leoparden ausgezeichnete Film auch als luzider Kommentar zum Thema Männlichkeit. (Silvia Hallensleben)

With his first feature-length film, Ruiz clearly positioned himself against the confines of agit cinema and in favor of artistic autonomy at the second, strongly politicized festival of "Nuevo Cine Chileno" in Viña del Mar. From the 1967 debut novel by Cuban author Guillermo Cabrera Infante, he developed his homage to a nocturnal Santiago, full of booze and violence. The poetic exuberance of the original is picked up in the chiaroscuro of Diego Bonacina's prancing wide-angle camera. Today, the film, which was realized with a minimum of resources and won the Golden Leopard in Locarno, also impresses as a lucid commentary on the subject of masculinity. (Silvia Hallensleben)
