Jahre nachdem die Mutter buchstäblich verschwand und die zwei kleinen Schwestern zurückgelassen hat, macht sich Flippa, die jüngere, auf die Suche nach Furia, der älteren. Reimend, monologisierend, aus der Literatur sowie ihrem Tagebuch rezitierend, stolpert sie in diesem skurrilen und experimentierfreudigen Roadmovie durch Italien und diverse Liebesgeschichten, bis sie in einem hippiesken Mutter-Kind-Kurort endlich auf Furia stößt. Auf ihrem Parcours erfährt Flippa, wie Frauen in Rollen gedrängt, Emotionen erzwungen werden, und fragt sich, ob und wie jenseits des „heterosexuellen Knotens“ zu lieben wäre – als könnte Liebe die Rettung sein ... The feature debut by German filmmaker, theatre director and performance artist Martha Mechow, DIE ÄNGSTLICHE VERKEHRSTEILNEHMERIN is an irreverent exploration of femininity and motherhood that waves its freak flag high. Beginning with an uncanny scene in which a woman is sucked into her living room couch to escape from her domestic duties, this freewheeling dramedy moves from Germany to Sardinia where Flippa (Selma Schulte-Frohlinde) reunites with her estranged older sister Furia (Ann Göbel). Since the siblings’ last meeting, Furia has joined a fringe feminist collective whose members aim to subvert society’s exploitative norms. They squat in abandoned homes by the Mediterranean, shoplift, throw impromptu dance parties and raise their kids without male interference—activities that Mechow renders with a musical and folk-magical delirium. The group’s collective shenanigans recall the anti-patriarchal antics of CÉLINE ET JULIE VONT EN BATEAU while the film’s lo-fi, improvisatory spirit evokes one of Lars von Trier’s Dogme 95 experiments. Yet Mechow’s whimsical treatise against the restraints of heterosexuality is on a revolutionary wavelength all its own. (Beatrice Loayza)
