Born in Graz in 1946, he spent his childhood in Eastern Styria. During the middle school years, he performed as part of the theater of St. Paul High School in the Lavant Valley. After the start of his architecture studies at the Technical University of Graz, he cancelled the additional training as a dental technician and more and more focused on the art of acting. He was accepted into the Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. After graduation he started his career in St. Gallen, Bern and at the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf. From 1979 to 1999 he was a member of the Berlin theater. There he worked with Peter Stein, Andrea Breth and Luc Bondy. He appeared in classic pieces of Kleist, Chekhov and Ibsen as well as in contemporary productions of Boto Srauss, Franz Xaver Kroetz and Yasmina Reza. With the start of the 1999/2000 season, Peter Simonischek joined the ensemble of the Viennese Burgtheater. Since 1982 he has been playing leading roles at the Salzburg Festival. From 2002 to 2009, he embodied the title role in Hofmannsthal's “Jedermann”. Since the late 70s Peter Simonischek was also regularly seen on television and in movies. In the movie NATIVE by Robert Schindl and Luke Stepanik he was playing the male lead. He acted in several fictional works by Alfred Komarek filmed by Julian Pölsler. For his voice he was awarded the “German Audio Book Award“ in 2008 and 2010.
