Meteorlar
Meteors

Shot in a variety of digital video formats, all unified in a grainy black-and-white, METEORS is set in the fractured landscape of Turkish Kurdistan, where the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has been in armed conflict with the Turkish government for decades. The film takes on the recent eruption of conflict with president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s regime through a set of mini-portraits that blur the terrestrial, the cosmic, and the political: eclipses foretell an indistinct and ongoing cataclysm, hunters stalk prey across a quasilunar landscape, and street demonstrations flare in urban centers hollowed out by state violence.
With a title that refers to the 2015 Perseid meteor shower – captured in psychedelic high-contrast streaks of flaming embers – the film matches these images with hostile bombs and celebratory fireworks alike, creating slippages between the factual and the mythic – are characteristic to a set of conditions that, in Turkey, are becoming increasingly beyond representation.
