Diamantino

Wenn Weltfußballer Diamantino auf dem Rasen zur Hochform aufläuft, dann verwandelt sich die Welt um ihn herum in eine fluffige Wolke mit herumtollenden Riesenpekinesen. Aber eines Tages bleibt die Wolke weg, ausgerechnet während der Weltmeisterschaft. Das ist nicht die einzige Anfechtung, die der Starspieler, der deutlich an einen realen portugiesischen Weltfußballer angelehnt ist, zu erdulden hat. Dunkle Mächte wollen an sein Blut, um die Europäische Union zu zerstören. Außerdem wird er von einem lesbischen Pärchen belagert, deren eine sich als sein Adoptivsohn ausgibt. DIAMANTINO ist eine nur teilweise bösartige, experimentelle Fantasie-Satire, zum Bestaunen und zum Belächeln. (Barbara Schweizerhof)

Diamantino is a world class footballer with an idiosyncratic secret of success: when he has his moments in a game the world around him transforms into a fluffy cloud and giant Pekinese puppies are running playfully around him. Then one day, unfortunately during the World Cup, the fluffy cloud doesn’t materialize, Diamantino misses the penalty kick, his crying face is instantly turned into a meme and becomes the laughing stock of social media. As he retreats into his castle-like residency, his problems only get worse. His two sisters, who live of him, are colluding with some sinister right wing forces. A pair of tax investigators suspect him of money laundering. Diamantino seeks relief in being a father and wants to adopt a refugee. Abrantes/Schmidt concoct a deliberately ludicrous plot, where political issues like secession from the European Unionand the refugee crisis mix with celebrity satire and fairy tale elements. Diamantino, played by Cotta with intriguing kindness and a charisma that transcends the simple-mindedness of his character, is clearly supposed to remind us of that certain real world footballer, who rubs his audience with arrogance and ignorance alike. In this playful vision ignorance is less a vice than a resource, exploitable for all kinds of fantasy projects. (Barbara Schweizerhof)
