Di qiu zui hou de ye wan

Nach seinem beeindruckenden Low-Budget-Debüt KAILI BLUES (Viennale 2015) ist Bi mit seiner neuen Arbeit in eine höhere Produktionsklasse aufgestiegen: Mit Tang Wei (aus Ang Lees LUST, CAUTION) zählt ein veritabler Star zum Cast, am Dreh waren drei Kameramänner beteiligt, und die längste Einstellung dauert über 70 Minuten. War der Protagonist des Erstlingsfilms noch mit Zug und Motorrad in seiner Heimatprovinz Kaili unterwegs, so muss der Held des vorliegenden Film noir auf der Suche nach seiner verlorenen Liebe durch Traum und Erinnerung reisen und in einer an Tarkowskis STALKER erinnernden Kulisse schon mal auf eine Seilrutsche zurückgreifen. As its title suggests, LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT follows a nocturnal trajectory, culminating in a 70-minute 3D sequence captured in an unbroken, unblinking shot that mimics the weightless sensation of guided meditation; as our protagonist pursues a mysterious woman through a variety of settings – most notably a fairground filled with singing people, sparkling lights, and countless entrancing visual details – Bi’s film comes down with a distinct case of VERTIGO. Hitchcock aside, the florid, fluid visual style and swooning romanticism in LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT owes at least as much to Hong Kong grandmaster Wong Kar-wai. The combination of these lofty influences, combined with the young directors’ astonishing ambition, results in a passage of pure cinema that splits the difference between trance film and the virtual reality system Oculus Rift.
