Lavrente Indico Diaz nutzt die charakteristisch lange Form des „slow cinema“ nicht nur, um die filmischen Konzepte von Zeit und Raum infrage zu stellen, sondern (damit) auch das kommerzielle Filmschaffen. Seit 2017 ist er selbst Mitglied der Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences - komplett ungefragt, wie er im Viennale Podcast mit Alexandra Zawia erzählt. Seine Arbeiten sind Werkzeuge der Trauerarbeit, der Konfrontation, der Erinnerung, der Investigation, der Meditation, des Widerstands, so auch ESSENTIAL TRUTHS OF THE LAKE. „A forlorn investigator looking for answers in a devastated area, I loved the irony,” beschreibt es Diaz. Nach seinem Shampoo sei er noch nie gefragt worden, seine Liebe zum Schwarz-Weiß-Film könne er aber in der Film-Sucht seines Vaters verorten: „He took me on a three-hour bus ride to the next town to watch eight black and white films every weekend, from Hollywood to Hong Kong, from the Spaghetti Westerns of Italy to the Slapstick Cinema of the Philippines. I found it terrible. But now I’m grateful. He was my film school, and that’s why my visual cortex is black and white.”
