Novaja Moskva

Das Neue Moskau

During the years of 1937/38 buildings in Moscow are blown up faster than a painter may draw them with a brush. While onion domes have to make room for wide boulevards with Stalin monuments, provincials and towners fall in love in the carnival of the streets. Medvedkin had the boldness to tell the story of the “big reconstruction” as a screwball comedy. The film got blacklisted – if nothing else, because it depicts in an eccentric way an homage to the old Moscow, which was vanishing in front of the overly optimistic protagonists.
