Stroheims The Merry Widow wurde bei Kritik und Publikum ein ungeheurer Erfolg kein Wunder, dass MGM eine Tonversion anstrebte. Bis zu deren Realisierung verstrichen allerdings fast fünf Jahre, da zahlreiche Schwierigkeiten und personelle Querelen für Verzögerungen sorgten. Am Ende fand sich dann das Trio zusammen, das schon bei Paramount erfolgreiche Filmoperetten gemacht hatte: Regisseur Ernst Lubitsch und die Stars Maurice Chevalier und Jeanette MacDonald.
A lifetime after its release in 1934, Ernst Lubitschs film adaptation of Lehárs The Merry Widow, starring Jeanette MacDonald and Maurice Chevalier, is still the heart and soul of gaiety. The viewer is quickly lost in the opulence, the extravagance, the heady froth of champagne and swirling ball gowns that are keynotes in this romantic comedy. Dont look for even a shred of social relevance. This film has none now. It had none then. But it is a story we can easily warm to, and the famous «Lubitsch touch» is evident throughout in his sophisticated storytelling: in what the camera discloses, what it conceals, what it merely hints at.
