With the passing of time, the universe of Philippe Garrel has become a curious place between realism and fantasy, between what seems to belong to the real world (and the people who live in it) and another, purely cinematographic one, which we could call a "bubble", existing only in the French director's imagination or sense of nostalgia. LE SEL DES LARMES doesn't have fantastical elements – like some of his other films – but it could easily be a dark fable that exists only in a parallel world called cinema.
This is the story of a young man, a carpenter's apprentice, who travels to Paris for a few days from the small town where he lives in order to take an exam to enter a prestigious school. But what he really wants is to experience the romantic possibilities of being in that magical city. The film will circle around a series of relationships and misadventures of this twenty-something man who seems kind and tender but who ends up being selfish, cruel, and confrontational. In the end, Luc will find himself faced with the consequences of his actions in a world that won't necessarily bend to his will. (Diego Lerer)
