Moune Ô
Colonialism “extracts” many things: natural resources, local talents and cultural heritages. Filmmaking, even when well-intentioned, does not escape the baleful effects of this cycle of appropriation. MOUNE Ô slows down and rewinds video images surrounding the making of the mediocre epic JEAN GALMOT, AVENTURIER (1990), a “celebration” of the French presence in Guyana; Jean-Baptiste’s father appeared in it as an extra. The pilfered sights and sounds that constitute a familiar brand of movie exoticism are haunted by larger thefts: of land, dignity, national identity. (Adrian Martin)
