In 1968/69 the Straubs left Germany and moved to Italy. There, in the pulsating city of Rome, they made their film \"Othon\", based on the 1664 play by French playwright Pierre Corneille. It is a piece about love and power, the private and the public, the intrigues of politics and the defense of the res publica. Marguerite Duras, fascinated by the film, wrote: \"Straub has catapulted Corneille into the presence. He has given tragedy its subversive meaning again, pushing ahead its healing process and resurrection with this outstanding piece of work.\" And apart from that he freed Corneille from the constraints of the theatre and brought his work back to life under Rome's great heaven with a truly exceptional cast of actors.
