Night Mail was never meant to be a work of art but thats what it became. The Post Office commissioned it as an information-cum-publicity film for its employees to show what happened to the mail on its journey to Scotland. It shows Britain as it probably was: companionable, ordered, hard-working, quirky, humorous, rigorous, self-confident, gritty, inventive, conservative, insular, down-to-earth, disciplined.
