The Straubs, foreigners and emigrants, make an attempt where the Italians failed after 1968: to create an Italian cinema of its own, in the language of the people, the literature of the country, the landscapes, the dialects, the villages and the attitudes of a people. Void of the distorted national tradition displayed by the Taviani brothers and others, they create \"From the Clouds to the Resistance\", based on the texts by Cesare Pavese. It is a story of blood and soil, starting with images of mythology and concluding with the resistance of the partisans. The Straubs have put so much beauty, warmth, grief and hardship into this single film, that it is a pleasure to watch it over and over again.
