A Valparaíso

Dutch filmmaker Joris Ivens’ made this lyrical city symphony qua essay film as a teaching exercise during his time as visiting professor at the University of Chile. A VALPARAÍSO is shaped by the poetic eye and sensitivity to the elements—the sea, the wind, the sky—that remained constants of his cinema. Somewhat unfairly, Ivens’ short is more often remembered today as a film by Chris Marker, who wrote the melancholy, world-weary narration.
