Why can’t Mathieu Amalric stop filming John Zorn? It’s because consciously or unconsciously, he understands that he can only get closer to this man if he imitates his restlessness. It’s this Sisyphean tirelessness, the fact that we must imagine Zorn (whose surname translates into German as anger) as a happy man, which is at the core of his art. He makes music in order to be alive. This time, however, Zorn is not the only protagonist, as the Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan enters the wild world of the composer.
Much more straightforward than its previous iterations, the film captures Hannigan’s rehearsals for a performance of Zorn’s song cycle “Jumalattaret” together with pianist Stephen Gosling. The work pushes her vocal capacities to the limit, with the sudden shifts in register, extended high notes and bird-like chirping demanding everything from her. The film displays a more traditional approach to the genre of music documentary than the first two instalments as it focuses on the struggles which occur while practicing for a concert. Zorn insists that it doesn’t have to be perfect. He teaches the art of letting go. However, when everything comes together, another kind of perfection appears. It’s contained in the feelings of those listening. “To be continued”, of course. (Patrick Holzapfel)
