Puissance de la parole

Already in Vivre sa vie Godard read Edgar Allan Poes work of fiction “The Oval Portrait” from the off. Now he updates its cosmological dialog “The Power of Words” from 1845. In Poes narration there were two angels, Agathos and Oisos, floating through a bottomless hereafter between the stars, absorbed into the conversations about the never ending universe, the almightyness or the powerlessness of a god, the strenght of words and the ether. Godard stays with Poes wording, but brings the angels back to earth. In his montage Agathos and Oisos have to stand and discuss as earhtly, rather antiquated creatures next to an oldtimer. Their place in heaven has been taken over by satellites, which are connecting telephones into discussions from their extraterrestrial orbit.
