HAO MAO
GOOD CATS
Again using a well-chosen non-pro cast, Ying Liang follows Taking Father Home and The Other Half with a third movie set in Zigong City in Sichuan, this time focused on a young guy who drives, fixes and collects debts for a dubious property developer. Luo Liang's marriage is in trouble. His wife is a nurse, and both she and her snobbish parents think she could have chosen a better husband than Luo, who won't give up smoking and drinking, never gets around to home improvements and is chronically unambitious. (...) Ying chronicles his anti-hero's downward spiral with his usual economy - and his usual sophisticated play with framing and off-screen space. And he underpins the jet-black social satire by using the Chinese Goth band Lamb's Funeral in a very surprising way. The sly title refers to Deng Xiaoping's famous call for pragmatism: «It doesn't matter if a cat is black or white as long as it catches mice.» (Tony Rayns)
