The film casts light on the relation to everything Jewish, the State of Israel, the Jewish community in Italy and the persecution of Jews by the Nazis during the occupation of Italy. In 1967 the communist writer and essayist Franco Fortini wrote a book entitled \"I cani del Sinai\" (The Dogs of Sinai). Taking this book as a starting-point, the Straubs embarked on a journey of research and surveying, excavating layers of the past, uncovering villages and names. One of the Nazis responsible for the massacre of the population of Marzabotto was awarded military honors in Austria just a few years ago. This story never comes to an end.
