LES MEUTES
Belgium, France, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia 2023 | 94 min | OV w/ EN subtitles

Tuesday, October 31: 3.30 pm - Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus

Moroccan writer-director Kamal Lazraq’s debut feature LES MEUTES takes us on a riveting journey through the underbelly of his native Casablanca. When local chieftain Dib’s beloved hound is mortally wounded in a dogfight between gangs, revenge is inevitable. For just a handful of cash, desperate small-time crook Hassan agrees to kidnap a thug from the rival gang, dragging his honest son Issam into the job. After the kidnapped man accidentally dies, father and son—superbly portrayed by non-professional actors Abdellatif Masstouri and Ayoub Elaid—must dispose of the corpse before dawn. Focusing on this troubled father-son relationship, Lazraq tracks his doomed heroes as they frantically move from one location to the next trying to save their skins. Blending realism with occasional otherworldly visions, he views them with compassion as one misfortune follows another. Strikingly shot by cinematographer Amine Berrada with an ever-moving camera in the natural darkness of night and underpinned by P.R2B’s haunting score, the duo’s tragicomic endeavor becomes larger-than-life. A bitter social satirical thriller, LES MEUTES ends exactly where it began, but Hassan and Issam’s lives will never be the same. (Maria Giovanna Vagenas)

TOTENTANZ
Pablo Sigg | Switzerland, Marocco 2023 | 93 min | OV w/ ENG subtitles

Tuesday, October 31: 6.30 pm - Metro, Historischer Saal

TOTENTANZ continues, or perhaps we should say, returns to the moment where LAMALAND (TEIL 1) ended. We witnessed the mutual violence that resulted in the death of the two last descendents of a utopian colony in the Paraguayan jungle, Friedrich and Max Josef Schweikhart. Founded by Nietzsche’s stubborn, racist sister Elisabeth and her husband, the colony thus ended in smoke and suffocation. What follows is a passage to a jungle underworld. The brothers reconcile in silence and go about their business in this enchanted universe now presented in black and white on 35mm, which captures the dust and decay of their dwellings with a rich variety of greys and nuanced shadow. Like the famous medieval illustrations of danses macabres, TOTENTANZ becomes a universal memento mori, a reminder that all things come to end but never stop. Sigg’s efforts to shoot a feature in situ without a crew and with a cast of two aging brothers little more than skin and bone are astonishing, not least because if we are to believe what we see, they are connected to modernity only by means of an old transistor radio that plays distorted Beethoven and Schubert as if beamed from some lost Heimat far away. Nevertheless, the true power of the film lies elsewhere—beyond good and evil. (Gerwin Tamsma)

The Territory

THE TERRITORY
Raúl Ruiz | Portugal, USA 1981 | 113 min | OV

Tuesday, October 31: 9.00 pm - Filmmuseum
Saturday, December 9: 6.00 pm Filmmuseum

A family trip to an eerie wooded area is derailed when the hikers can't find their way back. A chilling madness grips adults and children alike, tempting them to murder and cannibalism. In parallel, the real circumstances of the film shoot seem to be reflected in the story - or is it the other way around? Wim Wenders, both witness and supporter on the sidelines, was inspired by Ruiz's financial woes during the shooting of THE STATE OF THINGS, wherein he tells of the collapse of a film production, using Ruiz's actors. A nightmare fantasy of exile and return: "To get out of the park we have to get out of Europe, but to get out of Europe we have to get out of the park." (Robert Weixlbaumer)

UNTIL JANUARY 10, 2024: RETROSPECTIVE RAÚL RUIZ

Despite his varied output and multiple successes, Raúl Ruiz's extensive body of work is all too little known. For years, the filmmaker, born in Chile in 1941, was considered a rather elitist figure on the fringes of the European and Latin American film industries. Ruiz's enormous importance to the world of cinema, however, and the growing interest in his work that has finally emerged after all, can be attributed primarily to his legacy as a cinematic multi-talent. Audiences, creatives and film scholars return to his works again and again because they ceaselessly raise the question of what cinema can be at all - especially at a time when it is increasingly seen as an art form threatened by television, streaming services and other new media. Tickets & info here!

All retrospective films that will be shown at the Filmmuseum after the Viennale - from 1.11. - can of course also be reserved as usual at filmmuseum.at or by calling 01/533 70 54 and purchased at the box office of the Austrian Film Museum. The prices of the Austrian Film Museum apply.
