Auf amol a Streik

A strike, a bankruptcy, a large-scale investment fraud – whether as crises of the market or collateral damage that has always been reckoned with: documentary film in Austria has always focused on the market and the ways in which it reveals itself. In SUDDENLY, A STRIKE, Josef Aichholzer and Ruth Beckermann describe the struggle of the workers in the Semperit factory, Traiskirchen in the late 1970s. In A MILLION IN DEBT IS NORMAL, SAYS MY GRANDFATHER, Gabriele Mathes traces the consequences of the decline of her father’s furniture factory via her family’s Super-8 footage, while Thomas Fürhapter reports on the spatiotemporal dissolution of the global market into an all-encompassing network in MICHAEL BERGER – A HYSTERIA. These acts of filmmaking not only record these conditions, they also serve as a counterpoint to them: by listening in solidarity, by looking again at the world closely, or by finding a cinematographic form of analysis, the films strip the market and its crises of abstraction and reconnects them to lived lives, real places, personal memories.
