and so it came about (A Tale of Consequential Dormancy)
Those who have read Ovid’s Metamorphoses know that the Roman poet was a documentarian at heart. With this in mind, filmmaker Charlotte Pryce conflates the myth of Persephone with observations of nature and the way organisms enter dormant states in response to adverse conditions. As Persephone is abducted by her uncle Hades and eats from the forbidden fruits of the Underworld, Pryce confronts us with hand-processed 16mm shots very much based in our reality. Hinging on this staggering synthesis, her film becomes a refuge from the real world’s own adverse conditions by way of the powers of myth and beauty. (Patrick Holzapfel)
