MAELSTRöM
It begins with a fish -- whose monologue is actually continued by other fish after his head is chopped off -- telling «une tres gentille histoire.» After having an abortion, a depressed young woman named Bibiane accidentally kills a Norwegian fishmonger in a hit-and-run accident in Montreal. Bibiane's anguish is further compounded when she meets the fishmonger's deep-sea-diver son, Evian. The lack of dialogue leaves viewers to savour the recurring images of rushing water, dirty feet and fish guts, and a soundtrack full of extracts from some doomy (but invented) Scandinavian opera, the romantic songs of Charles Aznavour and a Tom Waits song appropriately entitled «The Ocean Doesn't Want Me.»
