Die blonden Locken und der Kirschmund täuschen: Am Ende hat Carlos ein knappes Dutzend Menschenleben auf dem Gewissen. Der Argentinier Ortega hat mit Rückendeckung von Produzent Pedro Almodóvar die Geschichte des Serienkillers Carlos Robledo Puch verfilmt und ihr einen sehr speziellen Vintage-Look sowie eine große Portion Homoerotik verpasst. Der Teufel mit dem Engelsgesicht ist im Buenos Aires der frühen 1970er Jahre ein Tänzer, der Freund und Feind leichten Fußes immer einen Schritt voraus ist – auch dank einiger formidabler Musiknummern. Das Gestern war nicht weniger grausam als das Heute, aber in EL ÁNGEL sieht es wenigstens verdammt gut aus. (Michael Pekler)

Carlitos is 17 years old. We watch him walk the street with his long blond hair and angel face before he casually breaks into a suburban house. After checking that he is alone, he begins to drink some whiskey and starts dancing to a tune he recites in Spanish: “It’s useless to try and understand or interpret his acts ...” This is how Luis Ortega introduces us to his first big production. A dramatization of the life of Carlos Robledo Puch, the most famous young serial killer in Argentine history, terrorizing the nation in the 1970’s with murder, robbery and other crimes.
Remarkable about EL ÁNGEL is that this fictional portrait is a narrative unconcerned with any kind of interpretation or analysis of a psychopathic psyche. It is a fresh and free tale, exempt from any kind of perversity or moral judgments.
Cinema historically seen has a romance with crime. A whole process of seduction. Ortega is seduced by his representation of “Carlitos” and without ever building up an anti-hero or any kind of idealization, he invites us to be seduced by this defiant representation of the status quo. Although the origin of his rebellion is just the possibility of finding in crime a means for satisfaction without any kind of interpretation. (Pedro Segura Bernal)
