Die Allgegenwart der technischen Bilder führt auch zu einer permanenten Anwesenheit globaler Krisen vor Ort: Michael Glawoggers und Ulrich Seidls KRIEG IN WIEN macht sich diese Medien-Realität zum Grundprinzip und verschaltet Nachrichtenbilder aus der ganzen Welt mit Alltagsszenen in Wien. Wo und wann die Krise beginnt und aufhört, wird zunehmend schwerer zu unterscheiden, ist mehr eine Frage der Montagefolge und weniger die tatsächlicher raumzeitlicher Gegebenheiten.
Zehn Jahre später porträtiert Anja Salomonowitz an einem anderen Ort der Bilder Carmen Martinek, die ein libidinöses Verhältnis zu Kinosälen unterhält. Doch das Kino gehört nicht nur ihr und ist zudem am Aussterben und damit auch diese Liebe schon auf dem Weg in die Krise.

Images and their dispositives don’t only give an account of various trouble spots in fictional and documentary forms, they themselves can become the subject by creating friction and irritation – between images and images and images and their viewers. The omnipresence of technical images also leads to global crises from one part of the world becoming omnipresent in another part of the world entirely: Michael Glawogger and Ulrich Seidl’s WAR IN VIENNA makes this media reality its basic principle and interweaves news images from around the world with everyday scenes in Vienna. Where and when the crisis begins and where and when it ends is increasingly difficult to distinguish, becoming more a question of montage and less and less related to actual spatio-temporal circumstances.
Ten years later, Anja Salomonowitz portrays Carmen Martinek in CARMEN, who has a libidinous relationship with some of the very concrete spaces of image-presentation – Vienna’s movie theaters. But the cinema does not belong to her alone and is also, it is said, threatened with extinction – meaning this love is also already headed for crisis.
