Shades of Green, Dschungelgeräusche und bedrohliche elektronische Pulsschläge dominieren in diesem Film, der eine alte Maya-Legende aus Yucatán ins Jahr 1920 verlegt und die Natur zu kontemplieren weiß. Keine traurigen Tropen sind zu sehen, sondern ein tragischer Wald, in dem plötzlich eine schöne dunkelhäutige Frau auf der Flucht vor einem Sklavenhalter auftaucht und die Arbeiter im Gehölz um den Verstand bringt. Doch das ruchlose Begehren der Männer im gesetzlosen Raum weckt einen mystischen weiblichen Dämon namens Xtabay auf, der im Herzen der Finsternis lauert und den kleinen, schmutzigen menschlichen Umtrieben am Ende mit der Kraft des Archaischen den Garaus macht. It's the 1920s and in the lush depths of the Mayan jungle near the Mexico-Belize, a group of Mexican workers are extracting gum from the trees. A small army of conflicting individuals, they spend months and months in the middle of nowhere, preying on nature, going slightly mad in the process. Suddenly, a young beautiful woman from Belize arrives and creates chaos within the already complicated and difficult group. And then maybe, just maybe, the jungle itself decides to take revenge on the invaders. Is this really happening or is the jungle playing games with their minds, trying to save itself from being pillaged? An historical epic, small in scale but complex in its ambition, SELVA TRÁGICA tells the story of a culture clash, of the ways in which the land – through its plants and animals, its spirits and even its powerful mythical creatures – protects itself from invaders and fights for its survival.
