Born 1958 in Vienna, is an Austrian avant-garde film director. He studied philosophy at the University of Vienna and the Free University, Berlin, and wrote his dissertation on "Film and Art" (1986). He has been making films since 1979 and has published extensively in the field of film theory and film history since 1984. He has several teaching positions, among others at the University of Art and Industrial Design, Linz (1989-2002), and at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna (1998-2006). In 1993 and 1994 he is artistic director of the "Diagonale - Festival of Austrian Film". His films have received more than 50 national and international awards, including the "Österreichischer Würdigungspreis für Filmkunst" (1996), the "Großer Preis der Internationalen Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen" (2002), and the "Premio Orizzonti for Best Short Film" at the Venice Film Festival (2010). Films by Peter Tscherkassky can also be found in numerous important collections, including the Centre Pompidou, the Harvard University Film Collection and the Cinémathèque Française.
