Slaughterhouses Of Modernity

For Heinz Emigholz, architecture is the face of the world. When he looks at buildings, he sees the state of a civilization. In SCHLACHTHÄUSER DER MODERNE, he presents an unusually polemical argument: there are buildings that not only mirror modernity in being literally slaughterhouses, there are even buildings that carry modernity to the slaughter. In fact, there is one such building in particular, the restored Stadtschloss (the former imperial castle) in Berlin, that he considers to be “the most disgusting building” in the world. He confronts the former ceremonial home of the German “Urnazi”, Hohenzollern ruler Wilhelm II, with views of public slaughterhouses (mataderos municipales) from the time when Argentina became rich as a meat- producing country, and eventually with the work of Bolivian architect Freddy Mamani Silvestre in an utopian counter-vision. According to Emigholz, there should be radical exchanges, the Stadtschloss should travel to the altiplano and indigenous culture and its anti-modernist playfulness should take over Berlin’s historical center.
