According to Soviet standards the former aviator and war heroine Nadezhda Petruchina has done everything right in life. Well, with more than 40 years old, she must realize that she is a college principal and mother of an adoptive daughter but is not loved. The memories of the horrors of the war are at the same time memories of a more vulnerable, less cold period. Filmed with easiness and precision, but completely without stereotypes, the film by the then only 28-year-old Šepit'ko amazes with its absolute modernity.
