In the style of old, earthy daguerreotypes and using a sound collage from Gustav Mahler’s “Kindertotenlieder” Sokurov lines out the cinematic vision of a decaying, perishing country. Motives and elements of the story of Dostojewskijs “Crime and punishment” momentarily shine through the hermetic film - in its tableau-like and dark lyricism reminding of the works of Andrej Trakovskij. A cinematic cosmos as a dark, fading poem.
