NORTHERN LIGHT, the debut film of Brooklyn-based filmmaker Nick Bentgen, details life lived meagerly in the upper Peninsula of Michigan, where the winters are long, cold, and isolating. The camera observes three families in a small town, struggling to stay afloat. The focal point of the film is the Sault Ste. Marie I-500, an annual snowmobile race that represents more than a weekend attraction – for many, their dreams and desires are wrapped up in this one event, and its cash prize. (...) While the snowmobile race at the center of the film is dramatic and engrossing, encompassing an entire film within itself, it’s the small, quiet glimpses that pull the viewer in, casting a compassionate eye on lives on the margins. But everybody struggles, and on a fundamental level NORTHERN LIGHT is a film we can all relate to. (Craig Hubert)
