DELTA is set in the Danube Delta in the Bukovina region, a space which allows the various tiny plot-lines to coexist in the film – villagers cut through tall reeds and ice to bring in the harvest by boat, orthodox church-goers fill vessels of holy water and fishermen rushing to catch as many fish as possible before the river freezes over. The film pays special attention to nature. It’s a central, recurring element, giving the film a mystical yet realist atmosphere and tone. The velocity of landscape is a central aesthetic element in the film and thus treated as the main protagonist of it. It is only in and through nature that we can comprehend and perceive the human figures in the film. And as nature becomes so omnipresent and omnipotent in the film, the human characters find themselves at the margins, physically and symbolically pushed to the edges of the frame; they become what is known in cinema as extras. Georges Didi-Huberman beautifully wrote: “The ’extras’ are the night of the cinema when cinema strives to be an art that makes stars shine. To a certain extent, they are to the world of shows what the miserable wretches – Les misérables – were to the industrial world of Victor Hugo’s time”. (Erez Pery)
