Cast: Behnaz Jafari, Marziyeh Rezaei, Maedeh Erteghaei
At the beginning of SE ROKH it would seem unthinkable that this could be such a light film. A young woman who wants to study dramaturgy takes the decision of hanging herself and filming it. Shocked and dazzled, the actress asks for Panahi’s help, and they travel together to the village where the young woman used to live.

Japan/F 2018, 119 min, OV with English subtitles, D: Hamaguchi Ryusuke,
Cast: Erika Karata, Masahiro Higashide, Koji Seto
Like a Strindbergean drama, Hamaguchi Ryusuke’s second feature, ASAKO I & II, brings latent psychological conflicts to the surface, externalizing its main protagonist’s psyche. Timid yet poised Asako falls for Baku, a sensuous, rebellious stranger whom she meets at a photography exhibition, only to be warned their romance doesn’t stand a chance. Surely enough, one day Baku disappears. Shibasaki skips to when a businessman, Maruto Ryohei, shows up in Asako’s hometown, Osaka.

DRIFT
Germany 2017, 96 min, OV with English subtitles, D: Helena Wittmann

Two women have a snack at the North Sea in Germany. They talk mythology. There once was a crocodile in a primeval ocean. The other woman, who is from Argentina, responds with a story from Patagonia, resonating the tale of the monster from Loch Ness.
In the presence of Helena Wittmann and Nika Breithaupt (Sound Design).

WALDEN
Switzerland 2018, 106 min, no dialogue, D: Daniel Zimmermann
It begins in one forest and ends in another, with more than 9000 kilometers separating them, a line that stretches all the way from the Steiermark to the Amazon. There are many places in between: deserted stations at dusk, border checkpoints in the pouring rain, shimmering ports by night, a tennis court by a vast river. A tree has been cut down and turned into planks, which now make their way from Austria to Brazil, a journey which slyly inverts the usual direction in which raw materials flow.
In the presence of Daniel Zimmermann and members of the team.
October 27, 6.30 p.m., Urania • November 3, 1.30 p.m., Urania

11X14
USA 1976, 82 min, no dialogue, D: James Benning
Cast: Serafina Bathrick, Ted Brady, Barbara Frankel
Series NEWS FROM THE ARCHIVE
James Benning has become famous for making movies which are at once exhibitions of landscapes or simply spaces and exhibitions of the guiding principles he entertained to structure his gaze – and accordingly the acousmatic space opened by this gaze. His method peaked with films like 13 LAKES or 10 SKIES. 11x14 is a reminder that the structural practice of Benning has a prehistory in his own work: The title refers to an American picture frame format, and therefore to the essential excerptedness of every image.

ANG PANAHON NG HALIMAW (SEASON OF THE DEVIL)
Philippines 2018, 234 min, OV with English subtitles, D: Lav Diaz
Cast: Piolo Pascual, Shaina Magdayao, Bituin Escalante
In this heterodox 234-minute musical film, all dialogues are delivered through songs. The tale is set in 1979, in a segment of The Philippines’ history in which Ferdinand Marcos’ militias killed, without judgement, anyone suspected to be related to Communism. The chosen form to tell this horror story entails a necessary distancing from the representation of horror, an aesthetic procedure which – just as the black and white and the extraordinary concept for the composition of each shot – reinforces the right distance to think about the practices of Fascism without yielding to the emotional impact derived from it.
In the presence of Lav Diaz.

AHLAT AGACI (THE WILD PEAR TREE)
Turkey/France/Germany/Bulgaria 2018, 188 min, OV with English subtitles, D: Nuri Bilge Ceylan
Cast: Dogu Demirkol, Murat Cemcir, Bennu Yildirimlar
Sinan, a young man recently graduated from a university in Çanakkale, jobless and with a passionate wish to publish a personal essay on everyday subjects seen from a philosophical perspective, is an admirer of Cioran and Nietzsche and he is going back to his hometown. His father, a respected school teacher – and also a gambler – is there, as well as his selfless mother, his scornful little sister, his grandparents, his old friends, and an ex-girlfriend who is just about to get married. The dramatic tension has to do with the unarticulated horror felt by the son in regards to repeating his father’s life, which is the starting point for a philosophical inquiry into the will to exist.

IN FABRIC
GB 2018, 118 min, OV, D: Peter Strickland
Cast: Gwendoline Christie,  Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Hayley Squires
Fashion designer Bill Blass once famously declared: “When in doubt, wear red.” In his latest Giallo filled hocus-pocus ecstasy Peter Strickland contradicts the statement by following the ways of a highly doubtful red dress. The film works like a dressmaker’s wet nightmare or a a surprisingly funny variation on Robert Bresson’s L’ARGENT. A haunted and beautiful red dress possesses dark powers and endangers the life of everybody who wears it. The film follows the dress instead of the characters. From a hilariously perverted and uncanny department store to a striking sound design and hypnotic musical score by Cavern of Anti-Matter everything within Strickland’s perception re-awakens the ghosts of 1970’s Italian horror cinema.
In the presence of Peter Strickland.

TROTE (TROT)
Spain/Lithuania 2018, 83 min, OV with English subtitles, D: Xacio Baño
Cast: María Vázquez, Tamara Canosa
In his first feature Xacio Baño opens up a disquieting dialogue between reason and instinct, humans and animals. Set against the backdrop of “Rapa das Bestas”, an age-old ritual in the Galician mountains which sees wild horses gathered together in the valley where they are sealed for identification as well as have their manes cropped, the film tells about tremors within a family after the death of one of its members. As the world looks different when in mourning it also becomes more difficult for the characters to look into each other’s eyes. The scars of someone missing are present in every image.
In the presence of Xacio Baño.

TI IMAŠ NOĆ (YOU HAVE THE NIGHT)
Montenegro/Serbia/Qatar 2018, 82 min, OV with English subtitles, D: Ivan Salatic
Cast: Ivana Vuković, Momčilo Pićurić, Jasna Djuričic
Young adult Sanja loses her job aboard a ship, drifts through Italy, and returns home to Montenegro. But her family is scattered into its separate members, and this dislocation mirrors a more widespread social malaise: now that the local shipyard has closed, everyone wanders about, improvising means of survival, or simply giving up. In YOU HAVE THE NIGHT, most of the major plot information is withheld, and crucial events are skipped out between scenes. As we follow these meandering characters spanning four separate generations, we must figure out for ourselves their now frayed and ambiguous lines of love, kinship, and parental responsibility.
In the presence of Ivan Salatić.
