QUOTE OF THE DAY
Truth is stranger than fiction because fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities, truth isn't.

TODAY AND TOMORROW: VERA

R: Tizza Covi, Rainer Frimmel
FR., Oct. 21: 12.30 GARTENBAUKINO
Vera goes to a casting session for a film. It’s a costume drama and the director cruelly rejects her, in just two seconds. He doesn’t feel the need to explain why: she already knows. With a face that has had a lot of cosmetic surgery, it’s difficult to make her look like someone from the 19th century. After a short conversation, she tells him that her father was Giuliano Gemma, one of the biggest Italian film stars, a mainstay of the Spaghetti Western. And the director, a huge fan, ends up asking her to pose with him for a selfie. This is the strange life of Vera, a 50-something actress who seems depressed with her life, which consists of going to boring social gatherings, drinking alone, living in the shadow of the famous “Ringo” and not getting any real acting jobs. A car accident (or was it really an accident?) changes everything and forces her to know new people, getting her into strange situations but also making her capable of facing unexpected risks. In this hybrid film that’s more fictional than it appears to be, Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel create another touching portrait of a life on the fringes, the story of a woman who struggles to maintain her dignity while the world seems to turn against her.
