Die letzte Stadt

The Last City
Heinz Emigholz
Deutschland 2020

V'20

(Lars Penning)

The metropolis-spanning discussions that make up THE LAST CITY double up as an exuberantly off-the-wall stroll through the outer reaches of the autobiographical. A sequel of sorts to STREETSCAPES [DIALOGUE] (V’17), a two-header based on the real-life transcripts of Emigholz’s meetings with his psychoanalyst, this new film spreads different attributes and lines of conflict from the German director’s life across an impossibly motley crew of characters and has them converse, augmented with a layer of obvious fiction whose thickness is up for debate. An archeologist talks war with a weapons dealer (or are they actually therapist and client?), a man in his 70s has a flirtatious chat with his younger self, and a proudly incestuous priest reassures his mother at a confessional, with one conversational partner being carried over into the next encounter, albeit as a whole new person. Just as the tone of the ever-cerebral discussions oscillates between the wry and the wrenching, the setting skips between locations in and across cities with the logic of a dream, a beautiful stream of architectural consciousness stretching from Berlin to Brazil that is also riffing on much of Emigholz’s previous work. THE LAST CITY is where all (people, cities, films) become one. (James Lattimer)
