She, a Chinese
The filmmaker Guo Xiaolu
Guo Xiaolu was born in 1973 in a fishing village in South China. She began studying at the Film Academy in Beijing in 1991. From 2002 to 2008 she lived in Great Britain, but then returned to her native China. Guo Xiaolu has already established herself as a writer, as a filmmaker she is most noted for her essayistic road movie Jin tian de yu ze me yang?. Trademarks of her films are a keen sense of curiosity, a direct approach to everything that interests her and an unmistakable sense of locality and people. Usually one sees her herself, as a questioner who lets others speak but also plays a part through her own observations. The Viennale is the first festival world wide to examine the oeuvre of this promising filmmaker in detail and shows in the main program, apart from her hitherto existing works, She, a Chinese and Women cengjing de wuchanzhe with witch Guo succeeded this year at the festivals of Locarno and Venice respectively. |
