THE HEDONISTS, filmed in Jia Zhangkes hometown, Fenyang, Shanxi, is an engaging drama about several unemployed Shanxi coalminers looking for work. Jia: “The Chinese title of the film is in my hometown dialect and refers to the ways in which people occupy themselves in life. I have always liked this term as it contains the meaning of ‘running’, ‘working’ and ‘carrying on’.”
