Frédéric is a middle-aged Frenchman who lives in a palatial mansion in Morocco, savouring all the privileges that his birthright has seemingly given him. He takes delight in the company of two supportive and understanding Arab women who run his household and kitchen. One of the day workers, the bright-eyed and high-spirited Raja, soon attracts Frédérics roving eye and he sets out to have her. Raja lives with a family in a small room; she has a boyfriend who will presumably become her husband and a girlfriend who acts as her confidant. Simultaneously flattered, repelled and attracted by the attentions of the older, wealthy Frédéric, Raja begins a flirtation without realizing what the consequences will be for her, her friends, her boyfriend or the increasingly unstable Frenchman whose desirous whim turns into something more sinister. Jacques Doillons extraordinarily intelligent new film is a devastating and highly provocative portrait of colonial society its attitudes, its legacy and the tragedies it can leave behind.
