As in her previous features CASA ROSHELL and NAOMI CAMPBEL, Chilean filmmaker Camila José Donoso offers another deeply personal character study to tell a hybrid story based on a mix of fact and fiction. NONA. SI ME MOJAN, YO LO QUEMO is a complex cinematic portrait of her atypical grandmother Nona, a 66- year-old woman who moves to a coastal town to live alone in self-imposed exile following a torrid act of vengeance. Suddenly, a strange large-scale forest fire takes place, destroying millions of hectares of woods in southern Chile, leaving the local residents restless and filled with fear. The police investigation turns up nothing and they thus grow increasingly speculative about the possible cause. Remarkably enough, Nona’s small home is undamaged. Incorporating turbulent past memories, the story is told in multiple film formats, including 16mm, digital, and video, capturing the multifaceted sexagenarian protagonist’s routines and relationships to create an enigmatic and colorful character. An intriguing film that draws from documentary sources to become an unconventional fiction that transcends all genres. (Gustavo Beck)
